Duck… duck… GOOSE!

17 Feb

I’ve recently started a love affair with fancy hair pieces, veils, and f-lowers.  I know it shouldn’t come as a surprise with my f-lair for the, er, dramatic.  No matter how messy your hair looks pulled up, it looks STUNNING when you add a decorated comb or clip.  It looks like it’s supposed to be that way, and I’m all about the accidental deliberateness of beauty.

One of my favorite shops on Etsy lately has been Which Goose. Which Goose is owned and operated by Emily, who quit her job as a graphic designer to design and sell on Etsy full time.

My two newest purchases are Anne Boleyn (and if you’re paying attention, I bought that one on the name alone) and Waking Life, another of her recycled hankie combs which I adore so much.

I really appreciate the little touches of whimsy she works into her pieces.  Each of them are hand stitched carefully, delicately keeping things in place, whilst at the same time keeping the adornments strongly fastened to the combs.

They tend to run from about 20$ to 35$ for combs,  30$ to 60$+ for crowns, depending on the piece and the materials.  She crafts a wide variety of products, from the combs you see here, to barrettes, little hair pins, boutonnieres, crowns, upcyled clothing and jewelry.

But as you can see from these shots as well as the one below of the backs, they are so well made the price is worth every penny and justifiable for the amount of creative work that goes into each piece.

Each piece arrived carefully wrapped in tissue and tied with a generous length of satiny ribbon fastened around the bundle.  She ships very quickly, both times I’ve ordered I’ve received my comb with in days, and at 5$ f-lat rate for shipping, it’s very reasonable.

Today she’s running a $9.99 sale with many of her gorgeous combs, clips, flowers, and barrettes.  I quickly purchased two long on my list of favorites, La Boheme and My Darling Clementine.  She’s adding new stuff to it all day, which I can already tell is going to cause me some trouble.

You can keep up with Which Goose on their blog as well as on Twitter.

I hate you. I promised myself i wouldn’t spend anymore money on etsy for at least another 2 weeks, but I will probably be snagging that 9.99 Hanky comb! I love a ridiculously fancy hair piece. I have been lusting after these for an eternity http://www.etsy.com/shop/jammerdesignz
As it turns out, the seller is my Tattoo artist! I should ask her for one at my next appt and save myself some shipping…

Ohhhh, I love those. I tend not to be to big on the OMG!SKULLS thing, though. I tend towards the more subtle slipping them in on the embroidery on my shoes, or embossed on my nails.

I would kill for a Barbie, though.

Yeah I’m not crazy about skulls either. I think it went downhill for me when i saw a skull cardigan at JC Pennys a few years ago…I think the appeal for me is the hand painting. And yeah the Barbie’s are amazing. I used a picture of one for inspiration for my Halloween makeup. I want them all!

I wish i could figure out how to wear such gorgeous hair things but my hair is so straight and Flat that it never looks right or stays in.

Mine’s pretty thin, too, but a little thickening serum, root booster and some clips and I’ve got a veritable mane.

  3. Integgy February 17, 2010 at 2:56 pm #

Oh, it’s so tempting, but my hair is so thin that it’s impossible to get combs and bobby pins to stay in.

Also, Tudor family love. It’s been awhile since I did a lot of reading about Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, but they used to be a point of obsession with me, one which I thought about constantly. Geez Grey, now I just want to have tea with you and talk about the life of Elizabeth I. xD

We should have tea next time you’re home. You’re close enough!

      • Integgy February 17, 2010 at 8:39 pm #

We should! I’ll shoot you an email when I’m in the area again (which unfortunately, probably won’t be until summer, since I’m spending spring break with a friend in NorCal).

Absolutely gorgeous! I have my eye on lots of the higher-priced items, actually. I totally caved for Morgana Minerals the other day and now I may give in to this…and the inclusion of the word “goose” in her etsy shop name only sweetens the deal.

I want the ablaze wire crown…but where would I wear it? *Sigh*

    • Grey February 17, 2010 at 6:58 pm #

I don’t get it when people say they don’t have anyplace to wear things. Wear them to the grocery store!

      • Cracked_Oblivion February 18, 2010 at 10:09 am #

Hehe, suggestion noted ;) I already stick out like a sore thumb in Kentucky with my oddball sense of style, so why not go all out, right??

I recently had the underneath of my fringe dyed purple, so I now have all of Which Goose’s purple/blue/violet hair combs (of which there are many) favorited. Now, to narrow it down…

Those combs are adorable… but the words “recycled hankie” are kinda blergh-inducing. No offense!

    • Grey February 17, 2010 at 6:57 pm #

Ok, maybe that’s the wrong way to describe them. ‘Vintage’ hankies, if you will.

super love her f lowery crowns!! One day they will be mine!
I just love messy hair and big f lowers (why does the f l plague me today?) and luckily my hair just loves being wavy and having things stuck in it (though the fiance is not a fan when I wind my hair up with a calligraphy nib pen…)

    • Grey February 19, 2010 at 11:40 am #

      The fl f l plagues us all…

  7. Lillian February 18, 2010 at 6:39 am #

I really want one of her butterfly hair things, so pretty! Thank you for leading me to her shop. Sadly i am on an epic no-buy.

    • Grey February 19, 2010 at 11:39 am #

Hopefully she’ll have some available when you’re ready!

  8. Corvida February 18, 2010 at 5:46 pm #

Nooo! Now that you’ve featured Which Goose, your readers will buy up all the pretties I’ve had in my favorites list for weeks!

    • Grey February 19, 2010 at 11:39 am #

I have a ton in my favorites and every time I look there is one less available :(

  9. Ella Runciter February 18, 2010 at 8:25 pm #

Lovely! I’ve been obsessed with elaborate hairpins, combs, fascinators, etc. since I was little (THANK GOODNESS the Age of the Scrunchie has passed!). I blame it on 23 years in the ballet studio…wearing one’s hair in a bun almost every day is a great excuse to wear fancy hair baubles. :) I’m definitely going to check out Which Goose.

    • Grey February 19, 2010 at 11:38 am #

She’s got beautiful things, and I think she’ll customizing something for you as well!!

Another Henry VIII fanatic here, I’m so jealous/happy for you snatching thre Anne Boleyn comb :) Well, you made me order. I found Fancy That from the regular priced section. Yes, it’s purple :P

    • Grey February 20, 2010 at 10:41 pm #

I’m so glad you ordered something! And sooo pretty, too!! You ARE a purple girl :)
